There has been a rise in the number of Carpal Tunnel syndrome cases. This syndrome is tingling, weakness, numbness and other issues which can happen to your hand. It mostly happens due to the load on the median nerve in the wrist. There is a small space on our wrist called carpal tunnel. Through this space a lot of tendons and the median nerve pass. The median nerve controls the sensation and the movement of the thumb and the other three fingers. A new study has suggested that students who use tech devices a lot often show early signs of this painful condition. It was also found that if you are spending an average of 9 hours a day using the phone, gaming console, tablets, and computers the chances of pain in the wrist and hand increases. The chances of this happening are high compared to people who spend less time on these gadgets. The swelling and the numbness happens due to the swelling of the narrow passage.
During the studies done, it was found that the people who used the devices intensively reported changes in the size and shape of the median nerve and also changes in a ligament called the transverse carpal ligament. Due to these changes people experience pain and numbness. This shows that the people who use technology gadgets intensively are at a greater risk of this syndrome.
In a new study that was done recently, the researchers collected data from around 50 students who were of the age group 18 to 25 years. The students were asked to share the time they spent on electronic devices and if they experienced any pain. They were asked to share the details for a year. Once all the data was collected it was calibrated and the researchers defined users as those who used the devices for more than 5 hours per day. Out of these 92 percent, intensive users complained of discomfort and pain. Only 25 percent of the students who used the devices less extensively reported pain and discomfort.
Long usage of the devices have caused issues and researchers are concerned that this can become a widespread issue. Also, doctors are looking at the pattern of usage of the devices in children. They are also using ultrasound to get better reports and to spot any problems. This is being done to find the problem and get a better idea of the problem.
There are various ways to prevent this problem. As per the tests that were done on the people who reported carpal tunnel syndrome, it was found that the nerves we either flattened or swollen and lead to other uncomfortable symptoms as well. With all the movement on the devices like clicking, tapping, scrolling, swiping and pressing also lead pain in the other body parts. People also reported pain in the shoulders, upper and lower backs, neck and even the elbows. Always make sure that you maintain the correct posture, keep the wrists flat and take frequent breaks. These factors can help minimize the chances of carpal tunnel syndrome and other problems which arise from the extensive use of tech gadgets.
